Two highly regarded members of the Rotary Club are the Mazda motorsport 787B and the RX7.The Group C #55 Mazda 787B powered by a 4 rotor 26B Wankel engine won Le Mans in 1991 at the hands of Volker Weidler, Johnny Herbert and Betrand Gachot. In doing so Mazda became the first (and so far the only) Japanese manufacturer and the only non-piston engine car to win the famous 24 hour race. Adding to this the rotary engine Mazda 787B is universally regarded (and recently praised by EVO magazine) as the greatest sounding race car ever! The other member of the Rotary Club design pays homage to the 1983 Australian Touring Car Championship winning 2 rotor 13B Wankel powered Mazda RX7. Winning four of the eight rounds contested, Allan Moffat went on to win his fourth Australian Touring Car Championship against formidable opposition in the RX7. Moffat’s win also secured the first ATCC win for a Japanese manufacturer. |
