Commonly referred to as “The Racer’s Coupe”, the Bertone styled out and out race version of the popular 105 Alfa Romeo Giulia, the GTA, was produced from 1965 to 1969. The “A” next to the GT nomenclature stood for “Alleggerita” which is Italian for lightened….glass was replaced with plexiglass and steel panels were replaced with aluminium to give the car a paltry weight of 760kg. The car was built in homologation numbers (500) and in full Autodelta tune managed to produce approx 170 bhp from the 1600cc DOHC, twin plug, twin 45mm DCOE weber engine.
The little GTA was the first touring car to lap the old Nurburgring (22km) in under 10 minutes and went on to dominate the race tracks of Europe winning the European Touring Car Championship in 1966, 1967, 1968, 1970 and 1971 (GTAm) |
