The Gibson Motorsport developed Nissan R32 Group A GT-R, rightly so christened GODZILLA, is an Australian motor sport legend.
Thoroughly dominating the “turbo era” of the Australian Touring Car Championship, the GT-R won the ATCC title in 1990 and 1991 with Jim Richards and in 1992 with Mark Skaife.
Capable of producing a maximum of 450kw or over 600 bhp, the 2.6 litre turbo six, all-wheel drive Japanese supercar holds the record for the fastest ever full-distance race record at the Bathurst 1000. Jim Richards and Mark Skaife having won the 1991 race in 6 hours, 19 mins and 14.8 secs at an average speed of 158.26 kmh!
The controversial, rain soaked win of the 1992 Bathurst 1000 secured Nissan GT-R’s second victory, the only Japanese car to do so and only one of three (non Holden / Ford) car manufacturers to win at Bathurst since 1963, the others being Morris Cooper S in 1966 and Jaguar XJ-S in 1985.
Jim Richards’ 1992 podium speech was legendary and helped to confirm the GT-R’s rightful place in Bathurst folklore. |
